One day after being announced as the new editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan, Joanna Coles sat on the stage as part of an EMILY’s List and Marie Claire Town Hallat the Democratic National Convention . Speaking alongside EL president Stephanie Schriock, EL candidates Val Demings and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, and actress and activist Ashley Judd, Coles discussed women’s incredible milestones in 2012.
Fast forward two months later and history has been made. A recording-breaking number of women elected to office this year, and Coles is now celebrating even more milestones.
In the dining room of a New York City restaurant on Monday, Coles hosted a lunch to celebrate 100 “fun, fearless females.” Included among the A-list attendees were Sarah Jessica Parker, Diane von Furstenberg, Sallie Krawcheck and author Naomi Wolf.
Along with Governor-elect Maggie Hassan, representatives-elect Grace Meng, Tulsi Gabbard and Elizabeth Esty each had the opportunity to share their experiences and goals. Speaking to the crowd, Esty offered some advice about what the campaign taught her: “Focus on what’s in front of you and you can do anything.”
Hassan, a member of the nation’s first all-female delegation in New Hampshire, told the all-female audience, “We don’t need binders full of women, we have ballots full.”
Coles’ support for women’s political candidacies could weave its way into the magazine, propelling more women towards influential achievements. She explained, “Every table of women here could run the country.”
